Roy Williams Causing More Headache

As someone who has avidly defended him, I was very disappointed yesterday to see the comments Roy Williams made about his lack of production in the Cowboys' offense. Not only did he comment on his own production, he seemed to throw bullets at just about everyone else.

When asked about the recent emergence of "that other guy" (Miles Austin) as the number one target, Williams quipped, "I'm the No. 1 receiver... but things are just going No. 2's way." Who says that? Really, I mean as if it isn't bad enough that Roy isn't catching many balls, he goes and throws Miles Austin under the bus by basically claiming Austin is just getting more good throws than him. Don't believe me? Williams continued on: "He gets the ball thrown correctly his way," Williams said of Austin. "I'm stretching and falling and doing everything. Everybody [else] who's been here's balls are there. Our footballs [from Romo to Williams] are everywhere right now."

Roy

Yes, Roy, who could expect you to catch a ball right into your hands when you're about to be hit? Even Michael Irving claims Williams should be catch more balls coming his way, saying, "You can’t expect your quarterback to always make perfect throws, not with 300 pounders buzzing around his head. If the ball is in your area code, you gotta catch it, just to show your quarterback you can. Those passes were within the area code." Now, I don't think I've heard anyone actually compare Roy to Michael Irvin, but as a guy claiming to be the team's top receiver, Michael is right, Roy has to catch more of those passes.

Some are saying that it's ok because Williams isn't complaining about not getting the ball enough, but I'm not so sure that this isn't worse. Not only does it hint that he wants the ball more, but it also accuses his quarterback of basically throwing terribly to him, almost as if Romo doesn't want him to succeed. I'll guarantee you one thing: if Miles Austin continues down this path, all this will end up being moot by season's end and Williams will most likely have one more year (since 2010 looks to be uncapped) to get things together. After that, if Williams is still eating Austin's exhaust, I think we'll see Williams in a new uniform by 2011. For a guy I've defended, he sure isn't doing much to win over his teammates, coaches, owner, or fans.
