So the A.L. Rookie of the Year was announced today, and with all respect to baseball and what these awards represent, Texas Rangers' shortstop Elvis Andrus was robbed, and in a big way. Andrus was a day-one starter for the Rangers this past season, who moved gold glover Michael Young to third base to make room for Andrus, signalling the kind of confidence they had in the then-20 year old. Andrus didn't disappoint all season. Not only was he solid on defense, while converting a high percentage of his league-leading putout opportunities, but Andrus was arguably the most consistent bat on the roster from the beginning to end of the year. All that being said, the man who actually won the award was Athletics' reliever Andrew Bailey. While impressive in his role, this is the equivalent of a pitcher winning the MVP award over an every-day player. It's the very reason pitchers have their own prestigious award (the Cy Young) and I can't disagree more with the decision here. Andrus was not only a great rookie, but one of the top shortstops in the league at the age of 20, and never crumbled under pressure. Either way, it's a shame to see Andrus robbed after such a great season.
