| Rangers Should Stick With Smoak | ||||

While Smoak hasn't come anywhere close to the numbers he was posting in AAA, the organization and the fans would be smart to remember that despite similar batting averages, Chris Davis was performing much worse before being sent to AAA in favor of Smoak. Sure, Davis is likely one of the better defensive first basemen in the game, but when a guy is hitting sub-.200, can't draw walks, and strikes out at an astronomical rate, it becomes too costly to keep him on the roster. That is where Smoak comes in. Throughout his first month, Smoak has proven to be an immensely patient hitter. Although his average is very similar to Davis' (actually lower at .165 compared to Davis' .188), Smoak actually has 11 RBI and has drawn 17 walks, something Davis never excelled at, and probably never will. Although Smoak hasn't been able to sport a high batting average as of yet, his unexpected power and patience at the plate both show indicators that he will be able to turn it around. It also wouldn't hurt if somehow, guys behind him in the order (whoever is playing catcher and Julio Borbon) were able to give enough production for pitchers to give Justin something to hit. Julio Borbon has possibly been the biggest disappoint so far in this young 2010 season. Pegged as the lead-off man of the future, Borbon has found himself shipped to the bottom of the order, oftentimes seeing himself pinch-hit for by David Murphy in game-changing situations. It speaks volumes of the confidence the Rangers have (or lack thereof) in Borbon by not sticking with him, especially given that David Murphy hasn't hit particularly well thus far in the season. Justin Smoak will turn it around. He has to, he knows it, and he will. The Rangers should remain patient with him.

Since coming to the big leagues a few weeks after the season started, an initial glimpse would say Justin Smoak has mostly disappointed.
